    • 摘要: The limited ability of the central nervous system(CNS)to regenerate in adult mammals after injury or disease is a significant problem.Intriguingly, neural stem/progenitor cells(NSPCs)offer great promise for regenerating the CNS.Endogenous or transplanted NSPCs contribute to repair processes, but their differentiation and function are abnormal in CNS injury and disease. The main reasons for these abnormalities are changes in the extracellular environment in the injured CNS that affect signaling pathways and transcriptional regulation in NSPCs.

    • 摘要: Mitochondria are well cha racterized by their fundamental functions in regulating cellular homeostasis, including energy and iron metabolism. These functions are essential in neurons with high metabolic demands and elongated neuronal processes.Mitochondria dynamically change morphology, localization, and activity to match neurons'spatial and temporal demands.Mitochondrial dysfunctions have been associated with many neurological disorders.

    • 摘要: After an insult of white matter tracts,e.g.in the spinal cord or optic nerve, axons react in general by the activation of a tightly regulated self-destruction program. This so-called axon degeneration cascade can be triggered by various causes, including injury, toxins, and genetic defects, and is a shared pathway in many different neurological diseases(Coleman and Hoke,2020).Axonal degeneration is thought to be responsible for disease progression and accumulation of disability across many neurological conditions. The hallmark of early axonal injury is the appearance of local spheroid formations along the axon, often referred to as a“pearl-on-string”pattern or axonal beading or swelling.Although this striking shape change has been observed after various types of injury, such as mechanical, chemical,or inflammatory stimuli,we know little about its exact mechanism and its immediate impact on axonal functionality. In this perspective,we would like to contrast the classical calcium-dependent form of axonal degeneration with a recently described form of a calcium-independent mechanism underlying axonal beading.

    • 摘要: Spinal cord injury(SCI)is one of the leading causes of disability and is a devastating condition that requires long-term care, reduces social productivity, and gives an immense emotional burden on patients and their fa milies.SCI frequently occurs due to traffic accidents, falls, slips, violence, sports, and medical accidents in today's society. The initial mechanical damage triggers a secondary injury cascade that induces more intractable damage(Silva et al.,2014).Secondary injury mechanisms have been postulated, including neuronal apoptosis, inflammation, oxidative stress, and excitotoxicity.

    • 摘要: Traumatic brain injury(TBI)is a major cause of death and disability worldwide.Age-related TBI differences demonstrate the third peak of prevalence and incidence of TBI within the elderly population. This is due to the elderly being at a higher risk of sustaining falls, which have been identified as the main cause(40–50%)of TBI.

    • 摘要: Traumatic brain injury(TBI)represents a significant cause of disability worldwide. It creates a vast array of damaging macro-and microscopic changes in the affected brain area(s),ranging from neuronal cell death, changes in structural spine integrity and dynamics to axonal injury and overall neuronal circuit disruption, ultimately leading to functional and cognitive deficits in both humans and animal models(Nudo,2013).

    • 摘要: Traumatic brain injury(TBI)remains a major cause of disability among young adults in both civilian and military settings contributing to a high burden on healthcare systems(Badhiwala et al.,2019).Sequel of TBI,even mild injuries, include motor and sensory dysfunction, neurocognitive decline, neuropsychiatric complications,as well as increased risk of neurodegenerative and neurovascular events such as Alzheimer’s disease and stroke(Breunig et al.,2013;Burke et al.,2013;Li et al.,2017).Despite the acute nature of the insult in TBI,pathological changes in the traumatized brain are better recognized as a chronic rather than an acute neurological disease,a phenomenon that remains under-investigated.

    • 摘要: Purpose:The study aimed to conduct a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of injury incidence in professional skiers and snowboarders. Methods:We systematically searched PubMed,Web of Science, and MEDLINE for studies on injury incidence published from inception to April 2020.Injury data were extracted, alongside information on injury location, severity, type, cause, and sport discipline.Incidence of injuries was presented per 1000 athlete-days,with 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs).Results:The search identified 462 articles, and 22 were included in our review. The overall incidence of injuries among professional skiers and snowboarders was 3.49 per 1000 athlete-days(95%CI:2.97-4.01).Lower extremity had the highest injury incidence(1.54 per 1000 athletedays,95%CI:1.24-1.84).Incidence rates of slight, mild, moderate, and severe injuries were 0.26,0.31,0.57,and 0.59 per 1000 athlete-days,respectively.Contusion had the highest incidence rate(1.82 per 1000 athlete-days,95%CI:1.01-2.63).The most common cause of injury was contact trauma(3.20 per 1000 athlete-days,95%CI:1.32-5.08).Freestyle skiing had the highest incidence rate(6.83 per 1000 athlete-days,95%CI:4.00-9.66),and Nordic skiing had the lowest rate(2.70 per 1000 athlete-days,95%CI:1.94-3.46).Conclusion:Professional skiers and snowboarders have a substantial risk of sustaining injuries. Our findings can be used to inform the planning and provision of healthcare for elite participants in different snow sports.

    • 摘要: Human spinal cord injury (SCI) results in locomotor and sensory disabilities, which severely affect the quality of life.To restore function after SCI,it is necessary to repair and reconstruct the damaged local circuitry.Major hurdles in neural regeneration include a limited level of neurogenesis in the adult spinal cord and an inflammatory microenvironment that inhibits neurogenesis and axon regeneration.

    • 摘要: Trauma is a physical injury caused by violence or other forces;in serious trauma, the patient will be at risk of death or loss of function. Trauma is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among all age groups. Objective: To study the pattern and outcome of upper limbs trauma in children attending the pediatric emergency department. Methodology: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Pediatrics at Security Forces Hospital-Al-Riyadh. Result: Total number of patients seen during the study period was 343 patients, their age range between 6 months and 13 years old with a mean age of 5.473 (±3.8572);also, results showed boys were 187 (54.5%) patients and girls were 156 (45.5%) patients. Based on the site of trauma in the upper limbs, lacerations were in 114 (33.2%), Hand and/or wrist fracture in 67 (19.5%), Nursemaid Elbow in 43 (12.5%), both Radius and Ulnar bones fracture in 33 (9.6%), Radius bone fracture in 29 (8.5%), supracondylar fracture in 22 (6.4%), Clavicle bone fracture in 20 (5.8%), Humorous bone fracture in 7 (2%), Condylar bone fracture 6 (1.7%), and there was 1 (0.3%) patient with Scapulae and Ulna fracture.
