汉语文学作品中的地名英译研究——以《西游记》为例

摘要

本文借助绍兴文理学院的汉英平行语料库，以《西游记》余国藩和詹奈尔的两个英译本为例，研究汉语文学作品中的地名英译问题。
　　《西游记》原文中的368个地名可以划分为行政区域名称、自然地理环境名称、人文建筑物名称以及其他特殊名称四大类。
　　研究发现，两个译本中使用直译法处理的地名要明显高于采用意译法处理的地名，直译法在两个译本中分别约占47.6％和40％，意译法分别约占20％和22.3％。两个译本中各有81％和75.8％的地类名称的文化意义得到了不同程度的展示;两位译者都试图忠实地再现原文地类名称，没有拘泥于某类特定的翻译方法，而是在把握原文地名构成和含义的基础之上，根据翻译目的，灵活地运用翻译方法。
　　作者由此归纳出汉语文学作品中地名英译的主要方法，即行政区划名称一般采用音译加意译法和音译法，自然地理环境名称、人文建筑物名称及其他特殊名称则可首先考虑直译法;若直译无法传达出地名的文化内涵，则可考虑意译法、直译加意译法、减译法、增译法。
