Selected Characteristics of Full-Time Humanities Faculty, Fall 1979

Questionnaires were sent to 673 universities, 4-year colleges, and 2-year colleges on the various characteristics of full-time humanities faculty, including sex, minority status, rank, tenure status and the highest degree earned in the humanities. Only four major humanities disciplines were included in the study: English, history, modern languages, and philosophy. Data from the 562 responding institutions (84 percent of the sample) were statistically adjusted to represent the national population of over 2,400 institutions with full-time humanities faculty and over 8,000 humanities departments. This is a descriptive report of the principal survey findings. The sponsor later issued separate reports on each of the four fields studied.
