摘要

Many readers will probably remember the Montreal Protocol and the subsequent elimination of chlorofluorocarbons, although some environmentalists questioned whether banning the ozone-depleting substances would have much effect, given their limited quantities compared to naturally occurring sources such as volcanoes. And, like El Nino—another reminder of nature's power— every few years there's a squall over lead somewhere in the world that sets off a domino effect around the globe. Today's concern seems centered on the flow of lead that's leaching like lava from landfills. One problem: It's not.
