Just a few papers have addressed the study of start-up operating policies for extractive distillation. For this reason, this paper deals with the design of start-up procedure and the influence of solvent feeding time. The start-up procedure developed is based on total reflux policy. To evaluate the spent time three cases is studied: the solvent feed being introduced at the same time of azeotropic mixture feed, the solvent feed being started thirty minutes and an hour after the azeotropic mixture feed was started. The results showed that the shortest time required to reach the steady state was achieved when both feed streams were feeding at the same time, the startup period was 2.86 hours.
