Proposed is a writing unit for installation in the arm rest (1) of a motor-vehicle seat, the writing unit being inserted in a recess (2) in the upper surface (1a) of the arm rest (1) near the front (1b) of the arm rest. In order to protect the writing unit from damage and ensure that it is easy to use, the writing unit can be covered by a cover (5, 10) mounted on the arm rest.
