Covered self-expandable biliary stents for the treatment of bleeding after ERCP

Bleeding is a recognized adverse event of ERCP, especially when sphincterotomy is performed, and may occur after 2% to 9% of procedures.1 Post-ERCP bleeding may either cease spontaneously or necessitate the use of endoscopic hemostatic techniques, such as epinephrine injection,2 balloon tamponade, electrocoagulation,3'4 argon plasma coagulation,5 or hemoclip placement.6 Most often, bleeding originates from the edges of the sphincterotomy site; however, bleeding may also be consecutive to common bile duct (CBD) wall trauma.
