Using Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning in Teaching Climate Change

POGIL-based Material on Climate Change (PMCC) was developed and implemented to the third year Bachelor in Elementary Education students of Pangasinan State University, Asingan Campus, Philippines. Conceptual understanding of students about climate change were based on the responsesto the Concept Test on Climate Change, attitude of students towards climate change were gathered on the responses to the Climate Change Attitude Inventory, and attitude of students towards POGIL activities were collected from the responses to the POGIL Attitudinal Survey. Conception of studentsabout climate change, attitude towards climate change and attitude towards POGIL activities were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and t-test. Correlation analysis was used to describe the relationship among the variables. Result showed that after the implementation of the PMCC thereis a change in the conceptual understanding about climate change and attitude of students towards climate change. T-test result revealed a significant change in the conceptual understanding of students about climate change and attitude of students towards climate change. Students’ conceptualunderstanding about climate change was improved and a positive attitude towards climate change was developed. Students also developed positive attitude towards POGIL activities. Pearson product moment correlation revealed a significant relationship in conceptual understanding of students towardsclimate change and attitude of students towards climate change; and the conceptual understanding of students about climate change and attitude of students towards POGIL activities. Thus, the study proved that POGIL activities is an effective tool in teaching and in enhancing student conceptualunderstanding and attitude towards climate change.
