Incubation to first feeding (Atlantic salmon)

On the last Back-to-Basics article we looked at the whole process of egg-taking and fertilization. In this article we will look at the processes from egg incubation to first feeding. This stage of the growing cycle can be broken down into three distinct phases, the green to eyed egg stage; eyed to first feed stage and the first feed to swim-up stage. Once the eggs have been water hardened they should immediately be laid out in incubation jars or trays. The eggs can be disinfected prior to placing inthe incubation unit and this is common practice in many hatcheries. Mandatory disinfection with iodophore is carried out on the newly fertilized eggs and before water hardening takes place in some countries. However, it has been found that this procedure can lead to a decrease in survival and should be avoided if possible when legislation and disease history allows.
