Validation of haemoglobin values obtained by hemocue method against the standard blood cell counter method.

The haemoglobin (Hb) values of 360 outpatients of a rural hospital in Haryana, India, was determined using the haemocue (HQ) method and the standard blood cell counter (BCC) method. It was found that 3.9 and 2.5% of the subjects had Hb less than 7 g/dl based on the BCC and HQ methods, respectively. The mean Hb values were 10.86 and 12.22 g/dl by the BCC and HQ methods, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the HQ method in comparison to the BCC method were 91.7 and 85.2%, respectively. The correlation coefficient was 0.900, indicating good correlation between the 2 methods. The HQ method overestimated Hb levels as compared to the BCC method.
