Careers guidance for medical students and foundation trainees

Despite many changes to undergraduate and postgraduate education and training, 'formal' careers guidance is a relatively new development. For many clinicians, careers have been quietly shaped through informal advice from consultants and general practitioners (GPs). Some have worked for inspiring seniors, or have been dissuaded through personal experience. Changes in curricula have led some students to have little or no exposure to some specialities. Continued change in the form of Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) is allowing another look at how students and trainees might be better served, both locally and nationally. In this article, we shalldiscuss some of the background to career development and MMC and, with illustrations from a local perspective, examine how undergraduates, trainees and senior clinicians might benefit.
