Howe and colleagues from the UK have studied a broad swathe of Literature in order to consider the question: 'what is resilience and what might it mean for professional development in medical education?'. They acknowledge the medical workplace as a challenging environment studded with a wide variety of stresses that can burn doctors out and - importantly - cause them to perform below standard for some time before finally giving in. But many doctors thrive in such environments, apparently gaining strength from the adversity they encounter.
