Communication is a basic condition when people want to understand each other and share ideas. Qualitative analysis methods help researchers to explore meanings of social phenomena, as experienced by individuals, in a more systematic and scientific way. Collecting in-depth interview data from research participants and thereby "learning from the inside" requires focused attention from the part of the researcher and that he/she is fully present during the entire interview. Ethical considerations are of course important in all research. The risk of identity threat must always be considered and compared to expected benefits of the study. Treating the research participant with respect and dignity, protecting his/her identity and protecting him/her from harm are the main ethical concerns in qualitative as well as quantitative research. The emphasis of qualitative interviewing is to pay attention to the other's understanding of a specific situation or phenomenon. A sufficient amount of data should therefore be assessed to capture variability in experiences and to make the study results valid and credible.
