To be truly effective, succession management must accurately map the supply of talent against demand, based on current and future business aims. Alignment has to come from an understanding of the strategy, as you need to know what kind of talent, and how much of it, is needed to support the direction in which the organization is going. According to a recent global survey on succession management (Korn Ferry, 2014), two thirds of respondents said that less than 10 per cent of potential leadership candidates were identified for pivotal roles within their company. If you add in to the mix that only 13 and 18 per cent of skilled professionals and mid-level managers, respectively, are included in succession management programs, that's an awful lot of talent falling by the wayside.
