This dissertation aims to provide a supplement to the present prevalent language teaching resources for Chinese students of Russian in China colleges. These resources overlook the necessity to help learners overcome persistent problems in the Russian learning process caused by certain differences between the target and native languages. In this dissertation, these problem areas in Russian language are contrasted with their counterparts in learners' first language (L1), and the different connotations between them are clarified. At the end of each chapter, carefully chosen tasks are provided. This approach is intended as an independent class to be taken only after concrete target language (Russian) focused exposure.; The theoretical bases upon which this dissertation rests are, in large part, consistent with the positions held by the Interlanguage hypothesis (IL), which believes that the native language has an important influence on second language acquisition. This work is divided into 5 Chapters. Chapter one introduces hypotheses and methodology in the context of influence of the mother tongue. Chapter two addresses problems of phonological differences between Russian and Chinese. In this section there are some points to which teachers should pay special attention concerning the usual problems Chinese students often have, which include the sound ы, consonant clusters and word stress. Chapter three considers lexical issues. I present 5 groups of general words and basic Russian verbs of motion as examples of the Chinese influence on Russian word acquisition. Chapter four discusses syntactic problems caused by learners' L1 Influence on Russian. The concepts of agents and subjects are clarified and L1 influence is discussed in terms of verb aspects, passive voice pattern and expression of double negation. Chapter five explores some cultural elements that affect the Chinese learner's Russian performance. Empirical evidence on interference in this area, for example, greeting expressions, culture-related words and expressions which find no equivalent in the other language, are presented. Idiomatic expressions between Russian and Chinese are especially contrasted in this chapter.
