Performance and learning needs of Taiwanese grandmothers: A three generations study.

The purpose of this study is to assess the performance and learning needs of Taiwanese grandmothers from the perspective of three generations of females with which recommendation would be provided for an educational program to help them adjust to their changing role. The 348 subjects included three generations of grandmother (n=116), mother (n=116), and teenage granddaughter (n=116) were collected at Taiwan in 2005. The instrument of Grandparent Strengths and Needs Inventory (GSNI) in the Mandarin version was applied to measure perceptions of Taiwanese grandmothers' performance and learning. Multivariate analyses of variance were applied to determine the significant effects of independent variables on the nine GSNI subscales: The total GSNI, the Potentials Index, Satisfaction scale, Success scale, Teaching scale, Concerns Index, Difficulty scale, Frustration scale, and Information Needs scale. Comparisons between generations were focal points. Findings revealed there were significant differences in perceptions about grandmothers' performance across three generations. All three generations identified that, overall, grandmothers had unfavorable performance on the Potential index while the performance on the Concern index were more favorable. Specific guidelines and curriculum topic are recommended for education to support grandmother development.
