A Dual Control System for Ventilatory Treatment of Premature Infants

The purpose of this study is to initiate the investigation of the combined effects of two closed-loop control systems in the treatment and management of premature infants. One of the automatic control systems is used to adjust the inspired fraction of oxygen, FIO2, and the other closed-loop system controls the main outputs of the mechanical ventilator. These systems which have been developed separately in the past, are combined and the efficiency of the dual control system is assessed. The arterial gas pressures of the infant are obtained by using a detailed simulation model of neonate's respiratory system. The results of this study indicate a definite advantage of this method compared with the conventional manual techniques. These findings will provide the theoretical ground for more detailed clinical investigations of this important subject in the future.
