Continuous cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are known to exhibit sustained oscillations under aerobic and glucose limited growth conditions. The oscillations are reflected in measurements of both intracelluar and extracellular variables. Our recent work has shown that unstructured cell population balance models are capable of generating sustained oscillations over a range of dilution rates. A disadvantage of unstructured models is they lack variables that can be compared directly to experimental data. In this paper we present a structured description of the medium that allows the cell population model predictions to be compared to easily measured extracellular variables such as the dissolved oxygen and evolved carbon dioxide concentrations. The proposed model is shown to replicate transient behavior observed experimentally for both batch and continuous cultures.
