Apparatus for making compressed wafers from forage crops, hay especially, comprises a wheled frame 12, an annular series of radially-extending die cells 58 circumferentially spaced about a rotary compression device 52, rotary means 36 for picking up the crop projecting from the front end of the frame, and an engine 18 to the rear of the rotary compression device, the respective axes 42, 26 and 20 of the crop pick-up means, the rotary compression device and the engine being transverse to the frame and parallel to one another, and belt and pulley arrangements for the transmission of power from the engine to the rotary compression device and from the rotary compression device to the pick-up means.
