PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for decreasing hydroxyacetone from crude phenol containing hydroxyacetone, without eliminating phenol or generating a large amount of acetoin.SOLUTION: The method for decreasing hydroxyacetone in crude phenol comprises a conversion step of converting the hydroxyacetone into a high-boiling-point compound by contacting the crude phenol containing hydroxyacetone with a solid base catalyst (A) containing at least one of a weakly basic solid base catalyst (i) containing a metal oxide and a solid base catalyst (ii) containing basic zeolite having a linear pore structure.SELECTED DRAWING: None
