The present invention relates to a method for producing galactose from whey permeate liquid or whey permeate powder solution, the method comprising: a step of removing a solid precipitate from the whey permeate liquid or the solution of whey permeate powder; a step of removing protein from the whey permeate liquid or the solution of whey permeate powder from which the solid precipitate was removed; and a step of removing ash or salt or both from the whey permeate liquid or the solution of whey permeate powder from which the protein was removed. Also, the present invention relates to a method for producing tagatose wherein the method comprises a step of obtaining tagatose by isomerisation of the galactose produced by means of the abovementioned method.
