摘要

Categorization – the cognitive process to understand the characteristics of objects by similarity or dissimilarity criteria — constitutes in Librarianship and Information Science (LIS) an intrinsic activity of recording organization knowledge, and represents the main theme of this article. We discuss some meanings given to those categories, both conceptually and exploratory, focusing on areas of Librarianship and Information Science and Cognitive Science. Then, we present the contemporary cognitive categorization and their constituents, since they are configured as an alternative to the proposed current categories and also as a possibility to be explored in the field of LIS.
