Structural health monitoring is an important safety factor in aviation that might211u001ebenefit from advanced smart systems for damage sensing and signal processing. 211u001eCurrent levels of structural safety and reliability do not present a particularly 211u001estrong case for smart systems but cost considerations related to inspection and 211u001emaintenance do. As an added benefit problems of poor accessibility and negative 211u001eeffects of human factors in inspection might be reduced. The implementation of 211u001esuch system requires development and demonstration by dedicated and qualified 211u001emultidisciplinary teams, acceptance by aircraft designers, manufacturers and 211u001eoperators and approval by aircraft designers, manufacturers and operators and 211u001eapproval by the authorities.
