摘要

This experiment tested the recognition capacity of human observers for linear binary targets presented tachistoscopically at various locations in the visual field.nFor targets whose centers register with the fixation point, vertical arrays resulted in most errors of reproduction and horizontal patterns produced least errors. Errors of pattern reproduction were generally most frequent when the target appeared along a hypothetical line through the fixation point, and least frequent when the target appeared perpendicular to that line. There was a slight disadvantage for targets appearing in the upper half of the visual field. Generally, there were less errors in areas near the fixation point.nThe target arrays in this experiment appeared at angles of 0°, 45°, 90°, or 135° to the horizontal and at nine eccentric locations relative to fixation. The observers were required to produce the inclination of the target array and the pat¬tern of binary elements.
