Large quantities of asbestos, a group of naturally occurring fiberous minerals, have been used in the construction of ships, especially since the World War II shipbuilding boom. Recent knowledge of airborne asbestos fibers involvement in asbestosis and mesothelioma as a primary casual agent and its contributory effect in lung cancer has been of concern to many groups.
