Assessment of Asbestos Concentrations in the James River Reserve Fleet

The airborne asbestos fiber exposure hazard to reserve fleet personnel while performing their routine duties was determined, through area and personal sampling, to not exceed 0.1 f/cc greater than 5 micrometers in length. Sampling and fiber counting procedures conformed with NIOSH analytical method P & CAM 239. An algorithm was developed to predict the asbestos exposure potential of MARAD work tasks. The algorithm was effective in predicting exposure levels when tested with data from this and other studies.
