Migration and Regional Development

The study has three objectives: (1) to examine the factors influencing the interstate migration of younger and older persons; (2) to examine the factors influencing state employment levels in manufacturing, services, wholesale-retail trade, government, construction, and other industries; and, (3) to examine the simultaneous relationships between migration and manufacturing employment growth. The migration studied was origin-destination migration between pairs of states (48 x 47 = 2,256 migration streams). Labor force migration was high where (a) origin and destination employment, interacting, were high, (b) the destination climate was warm, (c) retirement amenities were present in the destination, (d) distance between origin and destination was low, and (e) the destination unemployment rate was low. Retirement migration was high where (a) origin and destination population, interacting, were high, (b) destination climate was warm, (c) retirement amenities were present in the destination, and (d) the distance between origin and destination was low.
