A permanent magnet assembly(PMA) has been developed for focusing an image intensifiertype EMI 9912. The design is very simple and can easily be optimized for other image intensifiers. The selected design is based on a configuration called the Le Poole design. The mass of the PMA is only 15 kg and it has a very low stray magnetic field. Due to material problems in the magnetic material, a polymer based Samarium Cobalt material (Hera) used in the construction the full performance specifications are not met, but solutions to these problems are proposed. The study has shown the feasibility of developing a permanent magnet assembly for focusing an image intensifier in space.
