An Evaluation of Microfiche Reader Types for Use with Programmed Instruction.

This is the first phase of a four-phase study in the application of the microfiche medium for onboard training systems. This phase evaluates a cross-section of microfiche readers with respect to their ease-of-use by Navy enlisted personnel in loading/unloading microfiche and branching to specified microfiche frames. Sixty Navy recruits performed a microfiche branching task to simulate the branching requirements of programmed instruction. Five microfiche indexing methods, using four types of readers, were rank-ordered in ease-of-use using times required to load/unload microfiche and complete a tracking on 16 microfiche. It was found that the typical Navy recruit can, with a minimum of instruction, use any of a cross-section of microfiche readers. The realist/Vantage I reader with the grid map index was rated the most efficient, and this type of reader/indexing system was recommended for use in Navy training. (Author)
