The essential oils from aerial parts of 2 clonal types of T. vulgaris (Laval-1 and Laval-2) were characterized and tested for antifungal activity. Essential oils contained high contents of p-cymene (16.3% in Laval-1 and 20.8% in Laval-2), linalool (3.2 and 13.3%, respectively), terpinen-4-ol (21.8 and 5.1%, respectively) and thymol (9.5 and 18.1%, respectively). The essential oils exhibited activity against B. cinerea and R. stolonifer, 2 common storage pathogens of strawberries. Laval-1 and Laval-2 essential oils (50-200 ppm) inhibited the growth of B. cinerea by 26.5-63.5 and 36.9 to 90.5%, respectively, and the growth of R. stolonifer by 5.5-50.5 and 11.5-65.8%, respectively. Decay of strawberry fruits caused by B. cinerea and R. stolonifer wasreduced from 85.3-90.5% in control fruits stored for 14 days to 9.5-17.5% by 200 ppm essential oil; Laval-2 was more active than Laval-1. No visual phytotoxic symptoms were observed.
