California is famous for many things, but here's one you may not know about—its nut industry. The state that gave the world silicon valley is also America's biggest producer of walnuts. The two industries even have a technical problem in common. Just as semiconductors deteriorate in contact with air, so walnuts eventually go rancid. For each dollar spent on their farms, California's nut producers must spend a further 20 to 30 cents on artificial preservatives and elaborate packaging that is difficult to recycle.
