The Native Village of Kasaan, Alaska petitioned the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to prepare a health consultation for the use of the Salt Chuck Mine site (SCM), particularly for harvesting shellfish. Residents of Kasaan and of the closest community to SCM, Thorne Bay, in addition to other recreational users, may be exposed to contaminants from this site by eating shellfish and vegetation harvested there and by spending time at the site participating in recreational activities such as hiking and swimming.
