To the editor: In the Lead Review Article entitled "Effects of Trace Components of Dietary Fat on Cholesterol Metabolism: Phytosterols, Oxysterols, and Squalene," which appeared in the November 2002 issue of Nutrition Reviews, Dr. Richard E, Ostlund et al. stated "palm oil is not listed in Table 2 (palm kernel oil is a specialty fat, which is not identical) and has not been used widely in the United States in recent years because of its high saturated fat content and its significant LDL-raising ability compared with other fats." This statement contains false and misleading information on palm oil as follows.
