Context and setting A stepwise curriculum for central line training was introduced to University of Washington Year 3 medical students who were beginning their medicine and surgery rotations. The students had no previous experience with central lines. In this study, they received didactic lectures and technical training using a simulation model. Why the idea was necessary Central venous catheterisation requires knowledge of anatomy and sterile technique and is generally introduced during residency, but proficiency takes time to develop. The use of medical simulation for training in procedures has significantly improved over the past few years and has facilitated procedural training in a safe environment. For the past 2 years, University of Washington medical residents have received training in central venous catheterisation using simulation models. This has increased their procedural confidence and skill without incurring patient-related risks. What was done Four sessions were presented to 9 Year 3 medical students. A central line trainer (SimuLab; SimuLab Corporation, Seattle, WA, USA) was used for the skills workshops, which were conducted in the intensive care unit in order to provide a realistic environment.
