The feasibility was investigated of using whey and dairy effluent as substrates for microbial biomass protein (MBP) production by cultures of the algae Spirulina maxima and S. platensis. Biomass production was greater in 50 than 25% whey permeate and 5% inocula of S. maxima and S platensis respectively yielded 0.56 and 2.33 g/litre biomass with 6.5 and 7.72% moisture, 88.80 and 88.48% organic matter and 67.90 and 64.60% crude protein. MBP could also be produced by S. maxima and S. platensis using spent liquor from whey that had been fermented with lactose-fermenting yeast. S. maxima and S. platensis respectively grew in 25% dairy effluent supplemented with 4% NaHCO3 to produce biomass yield of 0.47 and 1.66 g/litre containing 6.20 and 8.00% moisture, 89.70 and 88.10% organic matter and 58.00 and 60.11% crude protein.
