Excerpts from the speech by Mr.Mohamed Iqbal, Chairman, Nilgiri Planters' Association (NPA) at the 126th Annual General Meeting of the Association held on 22nd September 2017

It is reported that the country has registered the highest ever total tea production of 1267 M.Kgs in the year 2016. However, the increase in production is due to increased North Indian production. The South Indian production in 2016 decreased by 7% and that of Tamil Nadu declined by 11% as compared to 2015. The Nilgiris production was also lower by 14%.The total production of member estates covering a period of 16 years shows that as compared to the year 2000, the total production in the year 2016 is lower by nearly 25%. In fact, in the entire period of nearly two decades the tea production has remained below the highest production recorded in the year 2000.
