Excerpts of the speech of Mr.R.Rajkumar, Chairman,Nilgiri Planters' Association (NPA) at the 128th Annual General Meeting of the Association held on 21st September 2019

The tea industry carries a glorious legacy of more than 150 years. The industry remained as one of the major foreign exchange earner for the country is now in a state of uncertainty. The plantations are in most trying situation with stagnant prices and rising cost of production.The District production was marginally lower by 2% in the year 2018 as compared to the previous year. Similarly in the first half of 2019 also the production was lower by 6% as compared to the same period of 2018. Though the average rainfall of the Nilgiri Planting District in the year 2018 was 20% more than the previous year, the production got lowered. However, member estates recorded a higher production due to favourable rainfall.
