Process force measurement in sheet metal forming is frequently employed in science and industry. Measured force progressions are mainly utilized in scientific studies to validate results derived with analytical or numerical models and investigate specific process characteristics. Therefore, the focus is to receive accurate force measurements during forming processes. In industrial applications, force measurements are primarily used to ensure stable manufacturing processes by observing and counteracting to deviations in force progressions. Hence, requirements in scientific and industrial applications differ with regard to the force measuring systems. This paper provides an overview of different force sensor applications used in scientific investigations. Based on this, an experimental study with a shear cutting die, equipped with four different force sensors, is carried out. The influences of sensor type, sensor position as well as the tool configuration itself on the measuring results are pointed out and discussed. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
