Opportunities to Increase Seafood Supplies to Arab Fish Markets

The Need to Increase Fish SuppliesFisheries and aquaculture make a significant contribution to food security and livelihoods of millions of people along the world's seashores and waterways. FAO most recent published fisheries statistics estimated that global production was 167 million tonnes in 2014, supplying around 20.0 kg/capita per year which includes a high percent of global animal proteins and essential micronutri-ents. This increase in total fish landings has been also met with an increasing demand which has been steadily met bya robust increase in aquaculture production that has grown to around 74.0 million tonnes in 2014 or around 44.1 percent of total production. Vulnerable populations in Low Income Food Deficiencies Countries (LIFDC) rely even more on fish for their intakeof animal proteins. While fish production from capture fisheries (marine and inland) has stagnated at around 93.4 million tonnes over recent years, the demand for fish and fishery products has continued to rise.
