Evaluation of the use of Enterococcus faecium NM2 as a probiotic for inhibitionof some urogenital pathogens

Urogenital tract infections are increased currently. Microbial pathogens include both bacteria and fungi. Due to appearance of multi drug resistant bacteria from urogenital system, search for new ways to control such pathogens is necessary. Probioticsare used herein to control urogenital pathogens.The probiotic bacterium Enterococcus faecium NM2 isolated from urine of healthy people was used for production of cell free supernatant (CFS) containing both acids and antimicrobial proteins (bacteriocins). Urogenital bacterial and Candida albicans TW2 strains were used as the indicator organisms. Common methods of antibiotic sensitivity and bacterial or candidal inhibition were followed in this study. The probiotic bacterium E. faecium NM2 survived in presence of antimycotic agents. It was resistant to 70% of the antibiotics used. Its cells and either CFS or Neutralized CFS (NCFS) inhibited the urogenital bacteria and C. albicans TW2 fungus used. E. faecium NM2 cells inhibited all the urogenital microorganisms used. CFS obtained from this probiotic bacterium showed higher antibacterial and anticandidal activities than that obtained by NCFS. E. faecium NM2 possessed the capability to be used as probiotic for protection against urogenital pathogens.
