It has been 10 years since Drs. Ed Libby and myselforiginally discussed — on a napkin in a cafeteria atthe hospital grounds of the old Lovelace building inAlbuquerque, NM - the idea of a region-wideconference in the field of hemostasis and clinicalthrombosis. Dr Libby was the director of the AnticoagulationClinic at the University of New Mexico's(UNM) Health Sciences Center and about to begin hisfellowship in hematology and I was just starting toget my clinical research feet wet as director of anewly-established Clinical Thrombosis Center, whichwas part of the old integrated Lovelace HealthSystem. Soon we were joined by Dr. Dave Garciawho, as co-director of the Anticoagulation Clinic atUNM, quickly established himself as an expert andteacher in the field of antithrombotic therapy.
