The role of psychology in music education

Historically, as in education moregenerally, psychology played amajor role in music educationthrough the development of psychometrictests to assess musical ability. Testingbegan in 1883 when Carl Stumpfsuggested a number of simple aural teststhat music teachers might undertake toselect pupils. Subsequently, a range ofassessments has been developed that canbe administered to groups of children ofdifferent ages and adults (for a review seeHallam, 2006a).
