Molecular switches prove a turn-off

Scientists hope that molecules that can act as electronic switches could one day lead to ultra-small electronic devices. But a team of US researchers has thrown a spanner in the works. It has discovered that phenylene-ethylene oligomers, promising candidates for molecular switches, may not have this property after all (Ramachandran et al. Science, 2003, 300, 1413).
