Organizations observed at any point of time are survivors of selective processes that have eliminated a large fraction of the underlying population. This is further complicated by the tendency to focus only on successful organizations in books and the business press. Thus, the available sampling of such organizations generally leads to a variety of false beliefs about effective management. The bias implies that many organizational theories will also be systematically biased.
