If the Lancaster Canal were in the Midlands, it would be one of Britain's most popular waterways. Forty-one miles of easy cruising without a single lock, and with stunning rural views plus some lovely canalside villages, would be sure to draw in the crowds. Yet few boaters venture there. Before 2001, the canal was entirely cut off from the rest of the system. Now, there's a through-route, the Ribble Link. With a tidal passage involved, though, how easy is it to navigate? The journey to the Lancaster starts at Burscough, on the western Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
