Opened in July 2002, the Millennium Ribble Link includes what was the UK's first inland waterway to be constructed in nearly 100 years and the first navigation to be built entirely for leisure purposes. Boats using the link must be aware that part of the route is tidal and additional equipment and precautions need to be taken. Passage is assisted by Canal & River Trust staff and must be booked in advance. From the Rufford Arm of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, boaters will lock out at Tarleton into the tidal River Douglas. It is about 4 miles down to Asland Lamp, which is kept to starboard as you turn eastward into the River Ribble. The tide can be strong at this point and it is essential you do not go the wrong side of the lamp as it marks an area of shallow water.
