Unsworth Inquiry Interim Report

On 18 November 2003, The Interim Report of the Review of Bus Services in New South Wales by Mr Barrie Unsworth was released for comment. This is a brief overview of the report, its recommendations and some initial responses. Submissions on the Interim Report closed on 19 December. The report is at: . In his Foreword to the Report, former Premier and Transport Minister, Mr Unsworth states that the creation of a bus transport system which provides common standards of fares, and service levels tailored to the needs of each community, is an essential outcome. It says that the problems canvassed and the solutions proposed are a response to the inequities existing in a system divided between long established and newly developed regions of Greater Sydney, between different bus operations, Government and private, and between communities with a variety of travel requirements. Previous attempts to deal with these inequities have been frustrated by an inability to reconcile the differing objectives and imperatives of private and Government bus operations.
