Pennine perambulations...

The Classic Trains article on loco-hauled trains via Standedge (Rl Nov 12) reminded me of my rarest Pennine haulage. On September 24 1982, I was returning home to West Yorkshire from a work course in Manchester and did the fill-in trip to Stockport then direct to Stalybridge. At Stalybridge the late afternoon train was delayed and eventually rolled in with Landore's 37303 hauling dead 46044. The story I was told was that the 46 had failed between Manchester Victoria and Ashton Moss Junction and the 37 was commandeered as it had been on a test run from Crewe Works to Guide Bridge.
