The forecast impact of spending cuts on public sector jobs is dramatic, with many estimates in the region of 600,000 or more. The fall has only just started to appear in the official statistics up to June this year, with 22,000 fewer public sector employees over the previous three months (contrasting with over 300,000 more in the private sector). Similarly redundancy levels had already started to creep up in the public sector by June, while they were falling in other sectors.
