Bibliographic critique des editions de Clement Marot (ca. 1521-1550)

AN UNATTRACTIVE TEMPTATION would be to bog down this review of an extremely important addition to the bibliography of sixteenth-century French literature, by asking where it stands in the spectrum of 'Bibliography', especially given the genesis and history of The Library. Suffice it to say that this is not a Grego-Bowersian descriptive bibliography. It is a very detailed analysis of the early editions of Clement Marot (1496-1544), including his editions of Villon, and of his father Jean Marot, based on the meticulous examination of many copies of the original works, and a lot of relevant secondary material, supported by thorough indexing. Guillaume Berthon's book is aptly titled. It is indisputably a study of books, and it is indisputably critical, both of the original works and of the secondary material.
